Little more than a year after leaving the Royal Academy of Music, where he was the winner of the prestigious Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks Award 2001 and recipient of a Peter Moores Scholarship, Rodney Clarke has emerged as one of the leading young talents in British Opera, with critically praised performances of Ferryman, Curlew River, at the BBC Proms and in the BBC2 film 'Flashmob - The Opera'.
Other operatic engagements include Tancredi, Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda; Figaro The Marriage of Figaro (English Touring Opera); Monk The Black Monk; Pau Luto, Another America: Fire at Sadler's Wells; Thoas Iphigenie en Tauride (Welsh National Opera) Count Almaviva Le Nozze di Figaro (Threestone Opera); Mel The Knot Garden (Music Theatre Wales); Christus in Bach's Saint Matthew Passion semi-staged (Sussex Chorus) and Workman 1 in Bernstein's On the Town with ENO. Recent engagements included Raschid, Tangier Tattoo, with Glyndebourne Touring Opera, the title role in Don Giovanni with Birmingham Opera, Anastase Sante at the Aldeburgh Festival , Porgy in Porgy and Bess concert version at the Barbican and Second Officer in Kenneth Branagh's film version of The Magic Flute.
Rodney is much in demand as both a recitalist and concert singer. Performances include a English Song recital with pianist Marina Savova at the Purcell Room, a guest appearance with the Pavao Quartet in the presence of HRH Princess Anne, Haydn's Creation at the Royal Albert Hall under Sir David Willcocks, Bernstein's Mass at the Barbican with the LSO under Marin Alsop and Mozart Mass in C minor and Concert Arias at Cadogan Hall, London.
Future engagements include the eponymous hero of the newly-commissioned Jonathan Dove opera The Enchanted Pig, Ashmodeus Tobias and the Angel for the Young Vic, Workman No.1 On The Town and Chief of Police Kismet for English National Opera and Leo Rebekkah for the Norwegian Opera.
