from the Reading Chronicle, February 200
WOKINGHAM Choral Society joined forces with the Guildford Philharmonic orchestra and the Guildford Philharmonic Choir for this presentation of Verdi's sacred masterpiece. Problems beset the organisers just 24 hours before the concert when the tenor soloist was taken ill.
At very short notice the talented William Kendall stepped in, blending superbly with the other soloists Claire Weston (Soprano), Jean Rigby (Mezzo) and D'Arcy Bleiker (Bass). The notoriously difficult passages in this work presented no problems to the choirs.
They also produced some superb harmonised dynamics in the Lacrymosa and the Sanctus. Conductor Edward Gardner maintained a firm control of both orchestra and singers and I hope there will be similar joint ventures between them in the future.
